Botox and Myobloc

Noninvasive Wrinkle Reduction

Probably over the past 10 years, no other treatment has generated as much interest, to say nothing of impressive results, as Botox. This paralytic agent, derived from (gulp!) botulism toxin, in micro amounts, acts to paralyze muscles that cause wrinkles, resulting in somewhat to dramatically smoother skin.

The most common areas treated with Botox are those of the upper face: the frown lines (the vertical line(s) that start just above the nose and extend into the forehead); the horizontal wrinkles of the forehead; and crows feet and other finer wrinkles along the outside of the eyes and along the lower eyelids. Other areas where Botox can be used include the muscles bands in the neck, fine wrinkles along the lips, and as a nonsurgical way to "sculpt" the eyebrows to both open them up and to elevate them slightly. In addition, studies have found that the injection of Botox can reduce the incidence and severity of migraine headaches.

Botox is simply injected in tiny amounts into those areas being treated. Pain is minimal to mild due to the very fine needle used to inject. The effects of Botox are temporary, typically lasting 4 months. To maintain results, the Botox must be reinjected 2 to 3 times a year. It has been Dr. Epsteins experience that with repeated injections, the duration of effect lasts longer and longer, probably due to some atrophy of the muscles in the area.

Botox has an outstanding safety profile, having been used in over 10,000 patients the past 6 years. Complications are very unusual, but can include (temporary) slight drooping of an eyelid, and bruising at the site of an injection.

Recently, a new product was introduced to the plastic surgery community, called Myobloc. This product works similarly to Botox, although seems to have a shorter duration. Myobloc is still under scientific investigation, and Dr. Epstein has done research on this product.
